Winter Skincare Tips
Its Christmas time! The holiday filled with snow, hot chocolate, eggnog, and Nat King Cole.
During this time, the weather can be cold and chilly causing our skin to become dry and brittle. It is always best to make sure that your skin, lips, and body is moisturized at all times. A dedicated skincare routine can help you maintain moisture in your skin. I wanted to give a few "winter skincare" tips to help you take care of your skin this 2022 winter season!
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) suggests not only this but to also modify your skincare routine by only cleansing at night. They advise only rinsing your face with cool water in the morning instead of cleansing to prevent dryness. Replacing astringents and soaps with mild cleansing products can stop your dryness. You want to be sure to use hydrating, cream-based products that will bring the porosity back into your skin. One fun fact I found is that you can use a humidifier in your home in order to add moisture to the air! I never understood how much our environment indoors could affect our skin. Lowering your thermostat can prevent dehydration and also help your electric bill too!
Moisturizing is highly important during this time of year! Try to apply at least two to three times a day. This will give your skin hydration after being outside in the elements. And yes, even those with oily skin need to be sure to use moisturizing products. The effects of winter can take the oil away. Instead of using lotions, try to find the cream or serum for your skin. I know I have dry skin in the winter so I use the following products to keep my skin hydrated and plump: Bio Dry Skin Gel ($13), Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum ($110), and La Roche Posay Ciciplast B5 ($14). I included my affordable options and my most expensive option so you can determine what you are looking for.
Sunscreen is also vital for this time of year! Even if it is cloudy, you want to make sure you have a moisturizer on hand to keep your skin protected. According to the World Health Organization, snow reflects up to 80% of UV radiation, which intensifies its harmful effects on the skin. Meaning that even on a gray, cloudy day, your skin can be affected. There are many products that naturally have sunscreen in them to not only moisturize but protect. Clinique, Aveeno, Drunk Elephant, and Maybelline have the best moisturizers and creams that have SPF built in to protect from the dehydration. Plus, they are affordable! I know I am not the only one that loves a great deal and product!
Lips! Let's not forget lips! There are a couple lip products that I recommend to not only keep them plump and soft, but also attractive (New Year Kiss)! One product that I have used for years, is the Original Mentha Lip Shine by Bigelow ($7.50). This will keep your lips looking amazing! It is sold at Bath & Body Works. EOS lip balm ($4) is another moisturizing lip product that I love to use and it even tastes sweet!
From your environment down to the fabric of your clothes can have influence on how your skin reacts. Wearing a fabric that is itchy to the skin or not soft to the touch can dry out your skin even more! Be sure to wear soft, plush feeling fabrics to prevent aggravation. These tips have helped my skin stay moisturized and hydrated this winter and I hope it helps your skin too!
